PUNT NEWS

Independent Reporting on the Horn of Africa

About PUNT NEWS

PUNT NEWS is an independent digital newspaper covering Puntland, the Horn of Africa and the wider world, with an emphasis on original reporting, verification, context and public accountability.

The PUNT NEWS emblem presents six stylized myrrh leaves in a single dark blue cluster. Myrrh, an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the genus Commiphora, situates the publication's visual identity within the ecological and commercial history of the Horn of Africa. These trees are a significant component of Puntland's and North Eastern parts Somalia's vegetation, and myrrh formed part of historic trade networks linking the region with the Arabian Peninsula and the wider world. The joined leaves symbolize the publication's attention to connections among places, communities and institutions. Their six-leaf arrangement is an artistic interpretation of the plant. The emblem expresses a regional perspective informed by historical context and a commitment to independent inquiry and evidence.

Botanical and historical sources: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Commiphora; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, trade in myrrh and frankincense.

What we cover

The newsroom is organized around three permanent news sections: Puntland, Horn of Africa and World. Puntland and the Horn of Africa receive the deepest reporting attention. Regional and world stories are selected when they have clear political, security, economic, institutional, social or strategic relevance to Puntland, the Horn of Africa or the wider Red Sea region.

The Horn of Africa desk treats the region as an interconnected system. Its coverage includes Somalia, Somaliland, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan and Egypt, together with consequential developments involving Kenya, the Gulf states, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, Bab al-Mandab and the Nile Basin.

How we report

PUNT NEWS seeks to establish facts before drawing conclusions. Reporters and editors prioritize primary records, named sources, contemporaneous documentation and direct evidence. Information obtained from governments, political actors, companies, advocacy groups, witnesses, other news organizations and social media is attributed according to its source and independently checked when verification is possible.

News reports distinguish established facts from official claims, contested assertions, analysis and uncertainty. Important subjects of criticism should be given a meaningful opportunity to respond. Material from other news organizations is credited, and PUNT NEWS reporting is written independently rather than republished without authorization.

News, analysis and opinion

News reporting, analysis and opinion serve different purposes and are labeled accordingly. News reporting is organized around evidence and verification. Analysis interprets events using evidence, chronology and relevant context. Opinion and Op-Ed are published separately from newsroom reporting and represent the views of their identified authors.

Corrections and accountability

PUNT NEWS corrects factual errors when they are identified and preserves a durable publication record. Corrections and substantive updates remain attached to the original Story ID so readers can follow the history of a published article rather than encounter a silently replaced record.

Languages

PUNT NEWS publishes English and Somali editions. Language editions share the same underlying Story ID while retaining their own Edition IDs and revision histories. Translation should preserve the factual meaning, attribution and uncertainty of the source edition.

Independence

PUNT NEWS is an independent publication and website. Editorial judgments are made according to news value, evidence and relevance to the publication's coverage mission. PUNT NEWS is not part of the Horn of Africa Institute or any other organization.
